A variety of forces have reshaped the business landscape over the past year, including climate change, the ongoing pandemic and the widespread transition to remote work. Early last year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said our company observed “two years’ worth of digital transformation in two months,” and all of us have been impacted by these global events to some degree.

Digital empathy—the practice of empathizing with others’ experience with technology—is no longer optional in our current environment. Technology has already played an important role in helping us adapt to our new business, cultural and social realities, and it will continue to be essential to our ability to adapt effectively.

I’ve been inspired by how the Microsoft partner ecosystem has stepped up to provide innovative solutions and guidance for our customers during these challenging times. Together, we have the potential to make life better for individuals, organizations, governments, and communities across the world through technology toward more inclusive economic growth. I’ve compiled a roundup of recent examples of technology being used for good, from our partners and some from Microsoft, which I hope will inspire you as well.

  • Microsoft partner Airnet Group helps its customers bolster security and enable remote workers with Windows Virtual Desktop and Microsoft Azure.
  • Our partner BindTuning builds customized, industry-specific templates on Microsoft Teams to help organizations respond to COVID-19.
  • The International Association of Microsoft Channel Partners (IAMCP) of Spain launched an initiative to help Spain work from home during COVID-19.
  • We partnered with SSE Airtricity to install and manage Microsoft Azure-connected solar panels to reduce our carbon footprint.
  • Microsoft’s partnership with Land ‘O Lakes will expand sustainability practices for farmers and reduce the rural broadband gap.
  • After the Special Olympics was canceled for 2020 due to COVID-19, Xbox partnered with Special Olympics to host the 2020 Special Olympics Xbox Virtual Gaming Event.
  • Microsoft committed to become water positive—replenishing more fresh water than we use as an organization—by 2030.
  • Microsoft launched an initiative designed to help 25 million people worldwide acquire needed digital skills by the end of 2020.
