If you’ve worked in the technology industry for more than several years, I don’t have to tell you that it has evolved considerably. Even if you’ve been in the industry for several months, you’ve no doubt noticed a shift.

Cloud is everywhere. Mobile devices are rapidly becoming primary devices. On-premises solutions still exist, too. It’s a hybrid, ever-changing world.

What can you do? We see it as an opportunity. A recent Robert Half Technology blog agrees. Author Robert Mann advises IT workers to “expect change and opportunity.”

Some ideas to keep your technological skills sharp:
  • Stay relevant—follow blogs, read articles, and stay in the know about new terminology and industry shifts. Mann also advises you to update your skills with certification or volunteer for projects that expose you to new technology endeavors.
  • Broaden your wingspan—don’t remain stagnant or too specialized. Work on expanding your skillset—technologically, but also the softer skills. As Mann suggests, work on critical thinking, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Plan for the unknown future. Mann wrote an insightful blog post covering the future state of technology careers, with tips and resources on how to stay on the cusp of innovation. Check it out!
