The partnership between Conexlink and US Medical IT is an excellent example of what cloud computing can do in the healthcare vertical. MyCloudIT is a remote desktop and remote application hosting platform created by Conexlink than enables Microsoft partners to deliver Azure solutions to end-users. US Medical IT is a Managed Services Provider who works exclusively with healthcare customers.

What led to the partnership opportunity was a client who was recommended to use a healthcare EMR application called PatientNow which runs on a Windows Server. This client was looking for a cost-effective solution that could help them connect and engage their customers in a seamless and fully integrated manner.

Solving Customer Pain Points Through Thoughtful Collaboration

US Medical IT was introduced to a set of customers who had a very particular need. They had adopted a new Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system that ran on Windows Server, but they had already made a big investment in Mac desktops, laptops and iPads. According to Stephen Cracknell, President and CIO of US Medical IT, the customer was looking for a way to bridge the gap between keeping an existing infrastructure but at the same time moving to a Windows-based server solution.

James Riley, CEO of Conexlink said that US Medical IT was recommended to them from Microsoft’s Partner Network. Stephen put it this way, “Microsoft recommended we get in touch with MyCloudIT, as they have a solution that can help with virtual desktops, so that the client’s Macs can link up to this virtual Windows desktop and everything would work pretty seamlessly. We reached out, had a conversation about the infrastructure and requirements, then after a few weeks we decided it was the right direction for us to go in.”

“Within a couple days, we had the full active directory environment built out and fully integrated with our client’s Office 365 tenant.”

James said “We assisted them in onboarding to our platform, understanding their customer needs, the specifications they had, and from that standpoint, Stephen really took the environment that we provided for them, and optimized it to their customer.” The two partners were quick to see how the functionality of their solutions was the perfect fit for addressing the needs of the customer.

Identifying Customer Benefits

The choice the healthcare client faced was a tough one. They needed to either buy all new devices or invest in new, on-premises infrastructure that would allow them to create an internal server-virtual desktop environment in order to run their preferred healthcare EMR app.

“We were able to give them option number 3, which was to run this in Microsoft’s Datacenter. This provided them with lots more flexibility and control over the solution.”

– Stephen Cracknell, President and CIO, US Medical IT

By working with MyCloudIT, US Medical IT was able to set up the infrastructure needed to make client migration to the cloud as simple and user friendly as putting a shortcut on the customer’s desktop. All they then had to do was click an icon to gain access to all the medical records, patient engagement, and practice management services the PatientNow application had to offer.

US Medical IT worked directly with the client, the medical record vendor, and the Azure team all on the back-end, making the transition to the cloud easy and saving their clients substantial time and money. Stephen said, “It’s like they had been given a brand new computer, without needing to invest in new machines.”

“That’s really where our technology comes in to eliminate the complexity in setting up these environments in the cloud. The MyCloudIT platform allows them to get right into creating the deployment, understanding the applications that users need access to, what sort of compliance that the network has to be under, and really being able to deliver it all to the client as simply as possible.”

– James Riley, CEO, Conexlink

The partnership also provided serious benefits from a security standpoint. “Microsoft signs a business associate agreement with healthcare entities saying that they have to keep that information secured. Then there’s a litany of different security protocols that Microsoft follows in order to get that done. With all that in hand,” Stephen continued, “we were able to ramp up a secured virtual desktop environment that was in full compliance with HIPAA requirements quickly and easily.”

Appreciating Partner Benefits

For Stephen and US Medical IT, it was a very simple process. “Usually, the act of configuring an active directory environment takes days. Literally, after we decided to go with MyCloudIT, they had enough scripts running in the background that once we provided some basic details, the entire environment was up and operational within a few hours.”

That benefit of returned time was substantial to the partnership. James put it this way, “To set up these environments, it could have taken weeks or even months. If you needed to go procure the hardware, configure the hardware, and then set up the active directory, that’s a pretty long process. We save our partners probably over 95% of that time being able to automate the deployment process.”

“So Stephen and his crew go to our platform, spend 30 minutes or less provisioning their needs like number of users, how much storage they need, hardware configuration, and within an hour or two the whole solution is built in Azure in their subscription.”

– James Riley, CEO, Conexlink

James said that beyond time savings, MyCloudIT provides customers with unique capabilities to manage cost. “With the MyCloudIT platform you can deploy, you can manage, and you can monitor. One of the management features is a scheduler that can turn your network on and off like a light switch. This means that customers can turn it off overnight, saving 8-10 hours of unused consumption that they would otherwise have to pay for.”

The ease of use means that even a non-technical director of operations sitting in a clinic can have transparent access to the same platform as their managed services provider. They can access their IT deployments, restart a program, or set a different schedule if need be. As the customer grows, their solution is able to quickly scale up when new users need to be added, providing value for the end user as well as the MSP. In great partnerships such as this, everybody wins.
