What is the MSA Programme?
Training for students and summer work placement facilitation
The Microsoft Student Accelerator was created after students and employers told us about the difficulties they face in the IT industry – particularly the lack of work experience. Students lacked important hands-on experience and the soft skills to collaborate and innovate – employers were looking for just that. MSA bridges this gap by training tertiary students across New Zealand on key technologies and providing them opportunities to get work placement and experience with organisations over the summer.
Key Information for Employers
This year we are training students in two different streams. 1: Front End/Back End Development and 2: Data, AI and Machine Learning. When submitting your project please identify if it is going to be a General development project or Data project.
Students are trained on Azure and the fundamentals, Web App, Cognitive Services, Big Data & Analytics, AI and Machine Learning, Databases & API, Serverless Programming as well as teamwork, presentation skills to help them be work-ready.
Employers provide an innovative project over a 10-week period (take place during November 2019 – February 2020) that their team(s) can work on. Each MSA team consists of 3 students.
During the Employer Evening (September – date TBC) both students and employers will get a chance to network and provide their team/project preferences for matching.
We are searching for Auckland based employers this year. If you’re based out of Auckland then you’re also welcome to support relocation for student teams.
We encourage employers to pay a full-wage or the minimum compensation of $1.5K per student to cover costs such as transport etc. so that students are not disadvantaged to participate in work placements.

“We found the programme extremely valuable. With an enthusiastic, highly intelligent and critically thinking team we were able to deliver a cutting edge innovation project that uses voice search, Natural Language Processing and advanced data integration to deliver better experiences to Southern Cross members. The team was able to deliver the prototype that exceeded all expectations and faster than anticipated. We are looking forward being a part of the program next year.” – Anna Tarasoff, Head of Data and Analytics Capability Southern Cross Health Society
